• What can you do to fix audio?

To fix audio, you can adjust the decibels in which it's played back at. In order to make audio quieter, you decrease the amount of decibels, and to make the audio louder, you need to increase the decibels.  

• What cannot be fixed?

The sound the audio is recorded at cannot be fixed. For example, if audio is recorded too quietly, there is only so much that one can do to fix it. However, while the sound can be adjusted, it can never be fixed. Similarly, if audio is recorded too loudly, it also cannot be adjusted back down to a normal volume.

• What is the optimal level for sound recording?

I discovered that the optimal volume for sounds recording is about -12 decibels. This value produced the highest quality of sounds in the normal volume recording.

Self-Reflection:

I thought that the music I added worked well. Also, I like most of the edits I made to the film, but some were superfluous. On that note, they were long stretches of the film that didn't have any edits, so next time, I may space them out a bit more. Also, I thought that our group worked really well this time, and were always efficient and on-task.

Reflection on Feedback from Classmates:

I agree that we used too much shakey cam in our film. It was all intentional, though next time the camera effect should be used more sparingly. Also, I agree with my classmates that David's editing was really good, specifically the part where he layers the footage of Chris thinking and when Chris got punched. Additionally, someone commented that the acting, specifically the punching scenes was very believeable, and I agree with that statement.

Reflection on Self-Improvements:

I think that I should help with the storyboard more next time. I was the person taking notes about it, so I didn't make very many of the decisions. While I like how our film turned out, I should contribute more of my ideas.

Reflection on Suggested Classmate Improvements:

Again, I would like to discuss the overuse of shaky cam. I agree that while it is a useful effect, we used it too much.

Statement on strengths and weaknesses

Some of my strengths include bringing the group together to be productive, and helping to set up some of the shots. One weakness is that I don't know much about the cameras.

Plan for what to focus on during future projects.

Better planning/recognizing of how often we are using certain camera techniques is defintely an area of improvement for us.

Improvements:

I can improve by paying more attention when other group members are using the caemra, so I can learn about it.

Strengths and how to make them even better:

I will continue helping my group set up camera shots, and think about them as we're planning the next storyboard. Also, I will continue making sure that the group stays on task/is always productive.

Rear Window: Film Analysis and Audio Study

Rear Window Panning Scene:

Many parallels can be drawn between the ending of the movie and the opening pan shot. First, the dancer is preparing food in the opening shot; and in the closing shot she and the man who came into her home were about to have breakfast. Next, in both clips after the shot of the dancer, it pans over to L.B. Jeffries sitting in his wheelchair. In both clips, Jeffries is revealed to have a new broken leg. Music plays loudly over the dialogue in both scenes. Through this juxtaposition of the beginning and ending clips, Hitchcock is essentially saying that though bad things can and do happen, normalcy is often resumed without a second thought. Additionally, the shift in the mood/the characters can be seen between these two clips. In the beginning one, many people,including the dancer and Jeffries, are alone; it is incredibly hot and sweaty, which symbolizes tension; and the broken camera and the pictures of exploding cars illustrate the conflict that is about to ensue. However, in the ending clips, no one is alone, the music is objectively happier, and people are no longer bothered by the heat. Hitchcock is able to tell the plot of the film in just these two clips by showing how easily the characters can adapt, and juxtaposing conflict with relative peace.

Video Analysis:

I like how direct and detailed this analysis is. It points out small cues that I never noticed, such as Lisa wearing cuffed jeans rather than her usual fancy dresses and reading about travel. It also opens a "window" into her and Jeffries' relationship, commenting that it has improved since earlier in the film, and that the characters are now more comfortable in each others' presence.

Personal Analysis:

I thought the use of perspective in this film was very interesting. We as viewers only saw the neighborhood through the eyes of Jeffries. This is logical, as Hitchcock likely wanted us to believe that a murder had in fact taken place. He wanted our only source of information to come from the perspective of Jeffries himself, so he kept it limited.

Sound effects: Clock ticking; clock going off; birds; lots of music; cooking; drums; children squabbling; snoring.

History: After WWII, Hollywood began producing many films with darker themes. Many dealt with the psychological feelings and trauma that post-war America was feeling at the time, after a time of such mass destruction. Some dealt with emotions that returning war veterans faced, as they tried to integrate themselves back into civilized society, while still others related to the feeling of general hopelessness that society itself faced after witnessing such a tragic point in world history. Since the world was so bleak after losing such a large number of people in the war, many Hollywood studios followed suit, and portrayed these stories in their films, so as to connect with society.
