Montage Summary

Montage is a style of filmmaking in which short clips are edited together. It can be choppy, and it often lacks a narrative structure. Additionally, it is highly symbolic, and it can be used in many ways. One of these ways is advertisements. While some of this can be relatively harmless, such as advertising a product, such as food, drinks, or electronics, montage can also be used negatively. One such example is propaaganda. Back in the days of Communism, many Soviet filmmakers used montage to convince the proletariet to abandon the Tsar and support the revolution. A famous example of this is Sergei Eisenstein's 1925 film The Battleship Potemkin. Eisenstein uses montage to convince Russian citizens to join and support the Communist Revolution.

While montage was used negatively in this case, not all montage is propaganda, just as all advertisements are inherently misleading.
